Sampaguita Film Showing

As Childhope continuously aims to create awareness among the general public about the plight of the street children and advocate for their cause, we will hold a screening of the film Sampaguita, National Flower, at the SM Megamall Cinema 1, on November 8, 2011, Tuesday as a post-celebration of the Children’s month in October. The film chronicles the lives of children, mostly street children in Metro Manila, whose lives are entwined with the national flower of the Philippines – sampaguita. All the children in the film are actual sampaguita harvesters and vendors. The film is also based on actual interviews with the children prior to production. Sampaguita won the Special Jury Prize in the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival in 2010 and was shown in several international film festivals. Mel Tobias of the Vancouver International Film Festival refers to Sampaguita as a powerful, provocative and standout movie from the Philippines which deserves to be seen. The film is written and directed by Mr. Francis Xavier Passion who also wrote and directed the acclaimed and multi-awarded film “Jay”.

The event particularly is aimed to create awareness among high school and college students about the plight of our street children who are in most disadvantaged situations and the factors that force them to live on the street. Childhope believes that our youth, especially our students, play a significant role in the development of our society and therefore, we should educate them about the social issues that confront our country today. We hope that through the showing of the said film, we will be able to bring the street children’s issues to the fore and create a better understanding about their situation.
